A1 Regular Model Verbs Präsens

Word Order in German with the Dative Case

1. General rule

• In a main clause, the conjugated verb is always in the 2nd position.
• Subject, dative object, accusative object, and adverbials can change order depending on emphasis, but there are some preferences.

2. Standard order (when both dative and accusative objects appear)

• Subject – Verb – Dative object – Accusative object – Other elements
  👉 The dative usually comes before the accusative.
  Example:
• Ich gebe dem Mann ein Buch.
  • I give the man (dative) a book (accusative).

3. If the accusative is a pronoun

• Then the pronoun often comes before the dative noun.
  Example:
• Ich gebe es dem Mann.
  • I give it (acc.) to the man (dat.).

4. Flexible word order

• You can move elements to the beginning for emphasis, but the verb stays in 2nd place.
  Examples:
• Dem Mann gebe ich ein Buch. → Emphasis on “the man.
• Ein Buch gebe ich dem Mann. → Emphasis on “a book.”

5. With modal verbs

• Conjugated modal verb is in 2nd position.
• The main verb goes to the end of the sentence in infinitive form.
  Example:
• Ich will dem Mann ein Buch geben.
  • I want to give the man a book.
